The casting of Rolando Villazón in the title role attracted much of the advance publicity, but the glitzy tenor is the only disappointment. Antonio Pappano conducts the five-act version that Verdi himself approved for a performance in Modena in 1886, and delivers an implacably powerful, mordant drama.
